North Bay Personal Injury Lawyers With a Local Office and Province-Wide Experience
In North Bay, a serious injury rarely stays local. Highways 11 and 17 meet here, bringing transport trucks and long-distance travellers through the city in every kind of weather. Specialist care may be hours away in Sudbury or Toronto. And northern winters turn sidewalks, parking lots and lake ice into hazards for months at a time. Injured people in the North deserve the same quality of representation as anyone in the south, without having to travel for it.
The Kahler Personal Injury Law Firm maintains a satellite office in North Bay, in addition to our offices in Toronto and Barrie. We act only for injured people and their families, never for insurance companies.

Injury Claims in Northern Ontario
North Bay had about 52,662 residents at the 2021 Census, and the wider census agglomeration had 71,736[1]. The city is a regional hub for health care, education and government services for a large area of the near north. Injured people are usually treated first at North Bay Regional Health Centre, with some patients transferred to Sudbury or Toronto for specialised trauma, neurosurgery or rehabilitation.
Within the city, collisions are investigated by the North Bay Police Service; outside city limits, the OPP generally responds. Personal injury lawsuits arising in the Nipissing District are commonly issued at the North Bay Courthouse, 360 Plouffe Street[2].
From the claims we see, the northern context changes three things. Injuries are often more severe because of highway speeds and winter conditions. Recovery is often slower and more expensive because treatment is far away. And insurers sometimes assume northern claimants will accept less. A well-prepared claim changes that assumption.
Highways 11 and 17: Trucks, Winter and Distance
Highway 11 and Highway 17 are two of the province’s key routes, and both carry heavy truck traffic through and around North Bay. Common collision types include head-on crashes on undivided two-lane stretches, rear-end collisions in snow squalls, loss-of-control crashes on black ice, and collisions with moose and deer at night.
If a transport truck was involved
Truck collisions often involve the driver, the carrier and sometimes other companies, such as the owner of the trailer or a maintenance contractor. Electronic logs, GPS and engine data, dash-cam video and maintenance records can show speed, fatigue and equipment problems. Commercial insurers also investigate quickly. We act quickly too, sending preservation demands and retaining reconstruction experts where needed. See our catastrophic injuries page.
Your two claims after any collision
- Accident benefits from your own insurer, whoever was at fault. Notify the insurer within 7 days of the accident and return the application within 30 days of receiving it[3]. Since July 1, 2026, medical, rehabilitation and attendant care benefits are still mandatory, but income replacement and most other benefits are optional and only available if purchased[4]. For injuries on or after that date, your auto insurer also pays first for medical and rehabilitation expenses other than medication[4].
- A lawsuit against the at-fault driver for income loss, future care costs and pain and suffering. Pain-and-suffering damages require a permanent and serious impairment or disfigurement[5], and awards under $159,708.71 are reduced by a $47,913.01 deductible in 2026[6].
Students at Nipissing University and Canadore College, retirees and seasonal workers should pay particular attention. If optional benefits such as income replacement or lost educational expenses were not on the policy that applies to you, those losses may need to be pursued in the lawsuit instead. Winter Falls in the City
North Bay’s winters are long, and falls on ice are one of the most common reasons people call us between November and April. These claims depend heavily on fast action because of two short notice periods:
- 10 days to give written notice to the City if the fall was caused by a sidewalk or roadway in disrepair, including some winter maintenance failures[7].
- 60 days to serve written notice, personally or by registered mail, on the occupier or its snow-removal contractor if snow or ice on private property caused the injury[8]. This applies to stores, plazas, apartment buildings, workplaces and other private premises.
Both notices must include the date, time and location of the fall. Photographs taken the same day, a record of the weather, the names of anyone who helped you and any incident report from the property are the evidence that wins these cases. Lake Nipissing, Trout Lake and the Trails
Recreation is part of life in North Bay, in every season. On the water, OPP data shows 249 people died in boating incidents it investigated between 2016 and 2025, and 83% of them were not properly wearing a lifejacket[9]. In winter, the OPP has reported that close to 40% of snowmobile deaths in its jurisdictions over a decade occurred on frozen lakes and rivers[10], a sobering figure for a city on Lake Nipissing.
When someone else’s negligence causes a boating, snowmobile or ATV injury, a claim may be possible against the operator, the owner, a rental or tour company, or a manufacturer. Snowmobiles and most off-road vehicles must generally carry motor vehicle liability insurance, so auto insurance rules can apply. Boats are usually insured differently, and federal maritime law may affect a claim. See our pages on snowmobile accidents and boating accidents.
Getting Treatment When Care Is Far Away
For many northern clients, the hardest part of recovery is access. Neurologists, physiatrists, pain specialists and rehabilitation programs may be hours away by car, in winter. Ontario’s Northern Health Travel Grant helps eligible Northern Ontario residents with some of the cost of travelling long distances for specialist care[11], but it rarely covers everything.
In a well-run injury claim, the cost and burden of treatment travel, including mileage, accommodation, meals and a family member’s time accompanying you, should be documented and claimed. We help clients track these expenses from the start, and we work to arrange assessments and treatment as close to home as possible. Where an injury is catastrophic, the claim must account for a lifetime of care delivered in a northern setting, which often costs more than the same care in a large city.
Disability Claims and Denials
Many North Bay residents work in health care, education, government, mining supply and the skilled trades, and many have long-term disability (LTD) coverage through work. When an injury or illness keeps you from working and the insurer denies or terminates your benefits, the effect on a household can be immediate.
Our firm handles LTD disputes, including claims involving chronic pain, mental health conditions, multiple sclerosis and chronic fatigue syndrome. A two-year limitation period generally applies[12], and it can be running while you are still working through the insurer’s internal appeals. Read why disability claims are denied, then call us for a free review.
What to Bring to Your Free Consultation
You do not need to have everything in order before you call. But if you have them, these documents help us give you a more precise assessment in the first meeting:
- The police or OPP occurrence number, and any collision report or ticket issued;
- Your auto insurance pink slip and policy declarations page, so we can see which optional benefits you have;
- Any letters or forms from an insurer, including denial letters;
- Photographs of the scene, the vehicles, the hazard that caused your fall, and your injuries;
- Names and phone numbers of witnesses;
- Hospital discharge papers and a list of your doctors and therapists;
- Pay stubs, your last two tax returns, and your workplace benefits booklet if you have one;
- Receipts for expenses so far, including travel for treatment.
If you cannot gather these, do not delay the call. We can obtain most records ourselves once you authorise us to act.

North Bay Personal Injury FAQs
Do you have an office in North Bay?
Yes. We have a satellite office in North Bay, along with our offices in Toronto and Barrie. We also meet clients at home, in hospital, or by phone or video.
I was injured on Highway 11 in a crash with a transport truck. What should I do first?
Get medical care and report the collision to police. Then call a lawyer before giving any statement to the trucking company’s insurer. Electronic logs, vehicle data and video need to be preserved quickly.
Can I claim my travel costs to see specialists in Sudbury or Toronto?
Generally yes, as part of your claim. Mileage, accommodation and related costs of necessary treatment can be claimed, after accounting for any amounts covered by programs such as the Northern Health Travel Grant or by accident benefits. Keep every receipt.
I slipped on ice in a North Bay parking lot last month. Is there a deadline?
Yes. For snow and ice on private property, written notice must be served on the occupier or its snow contractor within 60 days of the fall. Call us now so we can prepare and serve it.
What will it cost to hire your firm?
Nothing upfront. We work on contingency, so our fee is a percentage of what we recover, and if there is no recovery there is no fee.
